Plein Air Oil Painting Workshop
with Ellen Howard

Curious about plein air painting?
It couldn’t be easier with us!
We bring all the supplies,
and handle setup + cleanup.
You just bring your lunch.
Relax, create, and enjoy
a no-fuss day of painting outdoors.

Come join us at the Palo Alto Baylands for a delightful day of plein air painting, where creativity meets the fresh open air!
In this workshop we will work on how to look at a variety of subject choices and narrow it down to the strongest composition; how to interpret the landscape before you and fit it onto your canvas; how to utilize value, color, and shape to create a pleasing design; and how to utilize atmospheric perspective.

We’ll begin our morning with hot coffee and a warm welcome, followed by a 90-minute live demo from our instructor to spark your inspiration.
With brushes in hand and nature as our muse, you’ll then enjoy 90 minutes of your own painting time. Around midday, we’ll pause for a relaxing 30-minute lunch break (don’t forget to pack your favorite sandwich!), before diving back into the joy of painting all afternoon.
As the sun begins to dip, we’ll gather for a cozy 30-minute review session, complete with wine, cheese, and friendly feedback, to celebrate the art we’ve created and the beauty we’ve captured together.

SUMMER CAMP
The summer magic isn’t over yet!
Get ready for our Camp Recap Part 2.
Our paintbrushes danced, crafts came to life, and our studio was buzzing with creativity.

Week 5: Art in the Garden brought us to the breathtaking Filoli, where campers painted on location using miniature gouache sets we made specifically for the ocassion.

Back at the studio campers designed and assembled custom mosaic stepping stones. They cut the tiles, and applied the grout all on their own, some even including sweet inscriptions carved into the grout.

Our nature-inspired paintings and projects memorialized all the best parts of summer.

From there we enjoyed Week 6: Paint a Pet! We visited the Burlingame SPCA, and as always, were completely tickled by the adorable friends waiting to be adopted.

Back at the studio campers sculpted clay plant pots inspired by their favorite animals. After the clay was fired, they hand-painted the pots and filled them with carefully selected succulents.

Many students opted to paint their family pets for their large paintings, which always makes our hearts so happy. Who deserves a distinguished portrait hanging in our home more than our most loyal furry friends?

Week 7: Teen Week! returned for its second year, this time encouraging students to become “art thieves” a la Wayne Thiebaud.

In addition to their fabulous paintings, the teens crafted sculptures out of paper mache and mounted them to weighted stands.

Week 8: Wild, Wild West! is when we travelled back in time to dusty dirt roads and wooden sidewalks. We put on our boots and sidled over to our easels, seeing who could whip out our brushes the quickest.

We spent a day under the sun preserving details of a life gone by in our paintings. Ceramic jugs, worn-down cowboy boots, gas lanterns, and saloon doors are only some of the images that were captured by our brushstrokes.

At the studio, campers embroidered bandanas with western iconography to keep the dust out of their mouths and the sweat off their brows the next time they find themselves wandering through town on horseback.

At the art party on Friday we were all hootin’ and hollerin’!

Week 9: Bon Voyage, Summer! led us to the beautiful and serene Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco for a cloudy day of sketching the meticulously maintained landscape.

The moon bridge, koi fish, zen gardens, tea house, and pagoda gave us plenty of inspiration for our swiftly swishing pencils.

Back at the studio we soared around the world as our students found inspiration from sky scrapers to lush jungles for their large paintings and custom clay magnets.

Well folks, that’s the end of our Summer Recap!
We hope that while following along you could feel the absolute joy that comes from filling your days with like-minded friends, adventures to inspiring places, and making messes in the name of art and creativity.
